Moving from the Earth’s top to Antarctica’s depths, climate change grows more knotty
Understanding the behaviour of the Antarctic ice sheet has been important for understanding how climate change works because this ice sheet holds enough freshwater to raise ocean levels by 61 metres. Even partial meltdowns have the potential to put major coastal cities underwater. But glaciologists are far from pinning down the behaviour of these ice sheets decisively. They have known since the 1960s that there were volcanoes, mountains and some melting under the sheets.
