Leaving aside the contovertial survays, my personal experience is that poverty has decreased, the poor now are better fed, better dressed than 10 years ago.
more poverty has persisted bacuase the Govt. actively tries to keep the agri. prices low, which keeps the farmers their dependents poor; and depresses agri. production low.
food grain production is morre than what the population needs. The Govt compensates for that by buying the food and destroying it by allowing it to rot in the the godowns.
the country needs foods other than food grains, but the farmers are unable to diversify as they are kept poor by Govt policies on export, marketing etc.
because the govt has not paid enough attention to providing education health and infrastructure, we have huge untrained manpower side by side with industries suffering from lack of trained manpower. Various govt policies like labour laws, prevent industries from starting big scale manufacturing factories, which will employ untrained labour on a large scale.
to get elected our politicians use popular short sighted policies instead of rational policies. Their only aim in getting elected id to earn money through corruptiion.
