The last four hours or so have been like a suspense thriller ever since news filtered out that Jaganmohan Reddy will be arrested today. It is no surprise that he eventually has been arrested given the fact that he is accused number 1 in the disproportionate assets case, particularly when some others have been arrested. In that sense, it was inevitable.
The announcement of the arrest took such a long while obviously because the state administration had to ensure everything was in place and to ensure no untoward incident takes place in the state.
All eyes now will be on the political impact of this arrest. The immediate fallout is likely to be on the bypolls to one Lok Sabha and 18 assembly constituencies on June 12. Now that Jagan has been taken into custody, his mother Vijayamma will hit the campaign trail and given how Indians usually react to a mother, that is likely to generate a lot of sympathy for Jagan. That will certainly benefit the candidates put up by YSR Congress party.
In any case, the three-day non-stop coverage in both print and electronic media of Jagan’s interrogation by the CBI and associated developments on the political front have benefited Jagan immensely. Questions are being asked how is it that if Jagan is corrupt, how did he indulge in the corruption alone without the support of ministers of YSR’s cabinet. Congress has to convince the people of Andhra Pradesh on that point.
Once Vijayamma campaigns, it will be difficult for the Congress and the Telugu Desam to attack her in any way and that will be an advantage for her party.
